John Cippolina Tribute Concert Poster
John Cippolina Tribute Concert Poster
In the 1960s Rick regularly attended rock concerts in San Francisco and had the opportunity to see the area's leading bands. One of his favorite bands was Quicksilver Messenger Service, being particularly impressed by John Cipollinas guitar playing. In May 1989 Cipollina passed away, aged just 45, and Rick produced several works of art, one of which was used as the Tribute Concert poster for an event at the Fillmore. This was among the last concert posters Rick designed and presents the most advanced version of the Neo Gothic, 'hatchet' style lettering he developed. Created to advertise the tribute concert for Quicksilver Messenger Services legendary guitarist John Cipollina, of whom Rick had been a fan dating back to when he first moved to San Francisco. He produced several memorable concert posters for this group and also the cover for their first record, which is considered one of the premier recordings of Bay Area psychedelic music.
