In 1969 The Grateful Dead released their 3rd studio album entitled Aoxomoxoa. The album cover artwork was taken from a poster that Rick Griffin created for the band to announce a concert or “dance” as they were called then at The Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The band was so taken by Rick”s artwork and design that they decided to use the same piece for their aforementioned album, Aoxomoxoa. Rick had saved the original film from the printings of the album cover and we pulled them out some 50+ years later to create this unbelievable piece of fine art.
One fan legend considers the words "Grateful Dead" on the front of the album, written in large, flowing capital letters, to be an ambigram that can also be read "we ate the acid". Kreutzmann states, "Aoxomoxoa...doesn’t mean anything, it’s just a cool palindrome. People have surmised over the years that you could read the Grateful Dead lettering on the front cover as We Ate the Acid which, I suppose, is true enough, if you look at it just right."
